Consular legalization of documents. Apostille.

Today the Apostille in Moldova is no longer a “stamp” in the literal sense of the word. Moldova, like a number of European countries, operates with the Electronic Apostille. That is, a document and a special code to it are registered in the state system. A printout of the security code and document name is issued. No wet seals needed! Anyone who wants to check the apostille checks it on the state website of Moldova by entering the secret code.

Documents that have received legalization in one state acquire the status of legally valid ones in another state for which (or for which) it was made.

The key international document, according to which legalization is regulated, is the 1961 Hague Convention on Simplified Legalization.

If a document is legalized that is in circulation among the countries that have signed the convention, then the document is legalized according to a simplified scheme: the competent authorities put an international stamp on it, and at this the legalization is considered complete. Such a stamp is recognized as having legal force by all countries that have signed the Hague Convention, and is called “Apostille”.

If a document is legalized in a country that has not signed the Hague Convention, then a standard international procedure called consular legalization is performed. In this case, several legal actions are carried out with the participation of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova and the consulate of the country of destination.

And legalization for the CIS countries is solved in a separate procedure. At the moment, international agreements make it possible to consider documents circulating in the territory of the CIS countries that do not require any legalization. There are also several other special types of documents for which legalization is not required, or for the legalization of which, coordination with additional government agencies is required.
